"The Court’s behavior in the Louisiana and Alabama cases over the past six weeks can’t be reconciled with or explained by any coherent understanding of what Purcell supposedly stands for. ... The overall pattern reveals justices behaving in a way that has no obvious explanation other than politics."
The people who understood what was happening and spoke the truth about it *before* are the people we should be listening to *now*. People like Sherrilyn Ifill.
These are truly some astonishing figures.
Yaakov Roth was a Harvard Law School grad, SCOTUS clerk, and longtime BigLaw partner. His resume, law students were always told, was a sign that he was among those at the top of the legal profession. Today, he said Trump could tear down the Statue of Liberty tonight and no one could stop him.
Interesting new Inquirer piece by historian @rachelshelden.bsky.social today. (Gift link.) share.inquirer.com/jgU9C4

Really fantastic @jamellebouie.net column today. www.nytimes.com/2026/06/03/o...
Shocking, but not surprising.
NEW: Losing Trust in Justice Dept., Judges Call Out Its Lawyers’ Behavior The federal courts have long assumed that the government’s lawyers are trustworthy. Now judges across the country are criticizing their lack of candor. Gift link: www.nytimes.com/2026/06/01/u...
“President Trump’s upheaval of the federal government has led to an exodus of more than 10,000 lawyers since the beginning of 2025.” 10,000.

There is no coherent defense of the "Purcell principle" that can be rationalized with the Supreme Court's recent behavior in the AL and LA redistricting cases.

231. The Death of Purcell's "Principle"
In the 19th century, Americans expected Supreme Court justices to represent and even travel around circuits and engage with citizens. Staying in D.C. is a more recent development.

Supreme Court “packing” isn’t radical. It has deep roots in American legal tradition.

Who you say you are, what you say you believe, your identity as a citizen of this country, are all on the table. “Are you prepared to stand and watch as Black political representation is erased? Do you not yet understand that this is also your fight if you have any hope of living in a democracy?”
BREAKING: in May 2026, *every single one* of the 599 refugees admitted in the U.S. were white South Africans. In FY 2026, the U.S. has admitted a total of 6,665 white South Africans, three Afghans (back in November 2025), and nobody else. For reference, the U.S. admitted 100,060 refugees in 2024.
“If the government decides, very quickly, to bulldoze the Statue of Liberty... nothing can be done?” asked Judge Patricia Millett. “I think that’s right, yes,” responded DOJ attorney Yaakov Roth www.politico.com/news/2026/06...
I believe the current Supreme Court majority is better understood as legislators enacting their own partisan and ideological preferences, not judges constrained by law, precedent, and norms of judicial conduct. While I’m hazy what “illegitimate” means here, I don’t view them as real judges.
“People in the federal government are dissatisfied, are angry, are frustrated, and want no part of it. That’s translating directly to people saying, ‘I want to be part of organizations that actually operate with integrity.’” - Colorado AG (and fellow Ebel clerk) @philweiser.bsky.social
