“As the heat punishes sun-crisped Australian woodlands, the adult birds make a rapid, peeping ‘heat call’. That signal kicks off genetic changes in unhatched baby zebra finches’ brains”

Adult finches make "heat calls" as the temperature rises. Exposure to the song prepares their unhatched young's brains for the heat.
“The fresh fecal smell is a sign of science. The pellets contain fragments of DNA from the squirrels’ diet that paint a picture of the animals’ ecosystems in new detail”

“Homing pigeons don’t rely on gut instinct to return to the roost. But a nearby organ — the liver — might point the way. White blood cells in the birds’ livers accumulate iron and act as an internal compass when clouds block the sun...”

“By analyzing the chamber’s composition and the larvae it harbors, the team challenges the long-held notion that royal jelly alone — the queen-making food fed to select larvae — makes a queen.”

The Mind of a Bee, by Lars Chittka @larschittka.bsky.social, professor of sensory and behavioural ecology at Queen Mary University, London.
Have read it twice, it’s so damn fascinating.
É hoje às 19! Vai ser massa!!
Very interesting intersection of natural history, sensory and behavioural ecology! Also owls!

Old age is a risk factor for falling. The elderly must exert more conscious effort to maintain balance than younger people, according to a study in which participants balanced on force-sensing plates while their brain activity was recorded. In PNAS: https://ow.ly/yuo250Z5Fvo

Bumble bees can apparently play with balls, count, recognize faces, & perceive rhythm. A new study out today in @science.org argues they can also solve novel tasks spontaneously without explicit training, challenging the idea that such cognitive skills are exclusive to large-brained vertebrates.😲🐝🧪👇
¡Gracias por tu interés en participar de las charlas organizadas por la ACPP!
Los días 26, 27 y 29 de mayo, compartiremos tres encuentros virtuales sobre temas clave para la conservación de los psitác...
Problem-solving using novel solutions without explicit training is often considered a hallmark of cognitive flexibility. We investigated whether bumble bees (Bombus terrestris) could solve a novel obj...
