Matthew Barker, cobbler of Messing (Essex) was presented for instructing 'children to write & read' while he could neither 'write true orthography' nor 'spell well nor divide the syllables of words as a teacher ought'.

Barker only 'learneth children abcye & the Prymer', & the judge found the presentment against him of unlicensed teaching to be untrue. Barker in turn claimed one Mary Diglett taught writing without license.
Early modern education was obviously not the sole preserve of licensed male professionals
