I'm an Assistant Professor in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at UC Merced. My research group uses the tools of structural biology to study enzyme catalysis and other cool things that proteins do. (he/him)

“In nearly every industry, the United States’ most transformative innovations over the last eight decades depended on government funding, because the government was the most patient and reliable actor willing to take on risks for the public benefit.”
And China will reap the benefits.

"The NIH... supported 99 percent of the drugs approved in the U.S. from 2010 to 2019. The agency has had a hand in “nearly all of our major medical breakthroughs over the past several decades,”
The NIH is in a struggle for its (and our) lives. This is existential to America:
The CCP4 Structural Biology Summer School on macromolecular crystallography (MX), electron cryo-microscopy (cryo-EM) & associated techniques is July 31st to August 8th at the University of York - Provides training in the latest advances in structural biology - Learn More zurl.co/9RWzN
Science is under attack. The NIH, the NSF, and our research universities.
So today, I have a message for America's scientists:

My colleague sent me this paper and said she missed her bus stop reading it. I opened the link and was pleasantly surprised to see it’s a game-changing paper from a great team! Congrats!
Somewhere, something incredible is waiting to be known.
The jury is clear on this one
Lux Capital & @wolfejosh.bsky.social are launching the Lux Science Helpline - a $100M commitment to support American scientists whose research is threatened by funding cuts, bureaucratic hurdles, and career roadblocks - that expands our Lux Labs program.

Excited to see this out in @science.org today!! www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
I had someone tell me today his lab "is trying to use ChatGPT to design and implement experiments". They literally are asking it "to come up with experiments, write a protocol and communicate with other machines to implement it". I am in hell. We are in hell.
