Antiquary, librarian & #Huguenot refugee Andrew Ducarel was born OTD in 1713. Inside his copy (now mine) of ‘An essay on the antiquities of Great Britain & Ireland’ (Edinburgh, 1738), which I originally gave as a gift to my good friend Robin Myers, who made Ducarel a focus of her research.
Lovely rainbow spotted from the 6th floor of @theulspeccoll.bsky.social.
The erased inscription of Laurence Nowell in 1553, on the title page or a copy of George Lokert’s commentaries on Aristotle’s natural philosophy (Paris, 1518). Nowell also owned the unique manuscript of Beowulf, now @britishlibrary.bsky.social. Lokert is @theulspeccoll.bsky.social Sel.3.200.
We don’t usually see each other‘s headers. Here’s mine (Cruikshank’s 1812 etching of a meeting @antiquaries.bsky.social). Quote post with yours.
Jesus is a very photogenic college
"Pronoun police"? Please. The proper term is the gendermes.
This is the world famous Lycurgus Cup. It’s made from dichroic glass, meaning it changes colour depending on the direction the light comes from (red from behind, green from front).
It shows Lycurgus’ death. He tried to kidnap Ambrosia who was turned into a vine which then strangled him.
