One of the biggest regrets I have is being on the staff of the Allspark and not doing more to advocate for "vibes-based" banning. The owner was big into "we can't do anything if they violate the spirit of the law, it has to be the letter of the law"--while changing the law so it wasn't a violation!

What about the people who leave (or never join) because of the problem users that you're coddling? How many wonderful community members are you depriving yourself of because you favor known problems?

An online forum isn't a democracy, and there are always alternatives. You don't have to keep anyone around that you don't like, and you especially don't have to keep anyone that NO ONE likes. They'll land somewhere else; they only stay because they're not made to leave!
This has been going on for *decades*. How do you see the change in the world and think ideas like "spirit vs letter of the law" or "idiots can't help it, I feel sorry for them" are still viable in a forum? That's not how you build a community, it's how you get a Nazi bar.
