I keep thinking about how 22% of UK households do not have access to a car or van. I thought an icon array might help show just how many people are excluded by car-centric planning
A laudable target. But it's also laughable, unless serious money (and political will) is put into creating the infrastructure to enable it. That means reduced urban speed limits, and an extensive network of separated cycling infrastructure suitable for a 10 year old to use independently.
What's the case law that says that if one person at a junction/crossing has a green light then it's assumed that the other road user would have a red light?

The transport minister: “I tried couch to 5k, and found it really difficult. But ask me to leave my car at home and cycle five or 10 minutes to the supermarket when I want to pick up some milk and a loaf of bread, that’s something that I could easily do.” 🤞🤞 www.theguardian.com/politics/202...

If you also consider that in most households not all the members have access to a car - either because not all drive, or that the main driver takes the car to work every day leaving nothing for the rest - then the issue is even more important
The other great quote here is from Prof. Chris Whitty: “the most important thing that we could do from a public health perspective is get the people who do absolutely nothing at the moment to do something”.
Instead of raiding active travel budgets, make active travel a required component of the much larger roads budget.

Sheffield looks like one city - but is it? 🤷 People’s experiences of living here can be very different, depending on who they are and where they live.
