Congressman (#NY15). Born and bred in the Bronx. Grew up in poverty. Product of public housing. https://Torres.nyc/

I am proud to announce that we have secured $3 million for security lighting at Andrew Jackson Houses, a public housing development in the South Bronx. The project has not only been fully funded but also completed on time and on budget. Lighting is not a luxury. It is a necessity for public safety.
Internet is a basic need. Proud to announce that we are expanding NYC’s Neighborhood Internet Program, which provides free, high-speed broadband to New Yorkers living in affordable housing. Now an additional 2,000 NYC households will gain access to high-speed broadband across the Bronx.

I am proud to join @MetroIAF in advocating for the expansion of the OCC, a federally empowered watchdog that holds NYCHA accountable for making timely repairs in public housing. The 300,000 New Yorkers who live in public housing have a fundamental right to safe, decent, and affordable housing.
I am proud to have secured $700,000 in federal funding to modernize the library at Hostos Community College, which serves more than 6,000 students. This will be the first renovation of the library since it was built in 1990—36 years ago
In the South Bronx, about 40% of residents lack broadband access at home. That is why I partnered with the Mayor, HPD, and NYPL to secure $2 million in federal funding to bring free broadband to the Bronx. Our $2 million investment will save 2,000 Bronx families nearly $1.7 million per year.
After senselessly keeping DHS closed for 75 days for no reason at all, House Republicans have finally relented. The House just passed legislation reopening DHS without funding ICE or CBP. A hard-fought win by House Democrats under the leadership of Hakeem Jeffries.
I am proud to have secured $350,000 for violence interrupters in the South no Bronx. Based in Lincoln Hospital, violence interrupters from Guns Down Life Up reach out to at-risk youth in the hopes of steering them away from gangs and guns.

My statement on the Supreme Court’s Assault on Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act:

I am heartbroken over the passing of a civil rights hero: Clarence B. Jones, who served as counsel and close confidant to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., a co-organizer of the March on Washington, and a co-writer of the immortal “I Have a Dream” speech. May his memory be a blessing.
