Here we offer a quantitative and comparative framework distinguishing combinatorial systems from simpler ones. We do so by integrating new work, demonstrating diverse meaning-bearing combinatorial signalling strategies in natural animal communication, into cross-disciplinary theoretical frameworks.

One of the most thoughtful, carefully-phrased, pieces I have read on the topic: lots of good progress in recent years showing how we may have under-appreciated the structural complexity of non-human communicative signals 🧪

We are deeply grateful to Sir David Attenborough showing his passion for the Taï chimpanzees, supporting them despite them giving him the "most exhausting time of his life". Happy 100th Birthday 🎂

📣NEW paper📣
To date, only humans demonstrate meaning-based, generative communication. However, recent discoveries of combinatorial versatility in chimpanzee + bonobo vocal sequences open the possibility of generative communication in other species. Read here 👇

Yesterday, at the same spot the foto was taken almost 40 years ago (see below), a group of researchers of the Taï Chimpanzee Project gathered to send b-day greetings to Sir David Attenborough.
📣 NEW PAPER ALERT 📣 Coordination challenges shape signal complexity in chimpanzees, but not in mangabeys. This paper is adding strength to the broader hypothesis that social complexity is a principal driver of the evolution of complex signalling. Read here👇

Language has long been considered uniquely complex in the animal kingdom; however, animal research over the last decade has begun to challenge some long-standing premises about exactly which language...
Abstract. Increased coordination challenges, such as in the negotiation of group movement and activity, has been suggested to promote communicative complex
