I was telling my students about this yesterday. One of the cool things about having an immigrant parent is that my mom had no canon of English children’s lit in her head so she handed me some deeply bizarro things to read when I was a kid and it was excellent.
I lugged them to seminar yesterday and we spent time poring over them. They are truly astonishing.
Every time I read a medieval colophon complaining about the backbreaking labor of scribing, I think, "Yeah but did you do the work with an 80-lb labradoodle on your lap?"
Admittedly things could’ve gone pretty wrong after I read Enders Game at age 10? But it all worked out ok!
This point is so urgently important and absolutely has to be the starting point for any conversation about ā€œAIā€ bsky.app/profile/sonj...
