Today's movie is a very charming Soviet Russian fairy tale.
Зо́лушка (Cinderella) (1947)
This Russian version of the Cinderella fairy tale (dir. Madezhda Kosheverova & Mikhail Shapiro) sticks very close to the story as we know it, with the young Cinderella (Yanina Zhejmo) living as a servant under her abusive stepmother (Faina Ranevskaya) and her two stepsisters (Elena Yunger & Tamara Sezenevskaya). Her father the Forester (Vasili Merkuryev) is still alive, but unable to do anything to stand up to his wife, who constantly threatens to use her political connections against him.
