The Alaska House of Representatives is debating HB 280, a corporate income tax bill for online businesses.
Rep Andrew Gray, D-Anchorage just proposed an amendment to tax big AI companies who make more than $500M at higher rates - up to 22.5% in state tax to Alaska
"Right now, if someone in Alaska witnesses a murder or another violent crime against an adult and does not report it, the law treats that failure as a violation. Not a misdemeanor. Not a felony. A violation with a $500 fine.
That should alarm people. The fine is less than the penalty for littering
Amendment to tax AI companies higher fails by a 34 to 4 vote.
Gray admits it would have been a very steep tax
Notably, he lost the race for an Alaska House seat representing East Anchorage in 2022 by just 150 votes !
The House is scheduled to vote on the corporate income tax bill, HB 280 on Tuesday Mar. 31.
