Excellent & timely theoretical work from Nitasha Kaul and Barry Buzan on the concept of protofascism, how it differs from authoritarian populism. Protofascism need not be bound by Eurocentric contexts, it can be applied to Hindutva, for example.

The empirics presented in the paper were accumulated over several months of fieldwork in Taiwan in the summer of 2023 where I interviewed members of the g0v and "open culture" (開放文化) community, to whom I am indebted. This fieldwork was supported by the Taiwan Fellowship.
