I was thrilled to be interviewed by the Lady Jane Grey Reference Guide and talk about the challenges of being a medieval princess! mybook.to/EarlyPrincess
As Constable, Nicholaa had commanded the defence of the castle through the First Barons' War, seeing off the English rebels and their French allies (with a little help from William Marshal). 2/3
Discover the story of Nicholaa de la Haye: the Woman Who Saved England and the first woman to be appointed a sheriff in her own right. Her defence of Lincoln Castle led to the defeat of the rebels of the First Barons' War - and their French allies. Mybook.to/Nicholaa
It's Magna Carta Day! On this day in 1215, King John set his seal to Magna Carta. Intended to stave off civil war, it was an utter failure - initially. Although written by men - the barons - there were many women involved in its inspiration, creation and implementation. #medievalsky
Ah, Magna Carta Day. #otd in 1215, King John set his seal to the Charter of Liberties - now know as Magna Carta. And on this same day every year, historians are annoyed by every post on social media that starts with "King John signed..." Sealed, people sealed! 😡😘🤣 #medievalsky

Even after that, William Longspee, Earl of Salisbury - the father-in-law of Nicholaa's granddaughter - tried his best to force her out. But she held on to her inheritance, only retiring once Longspee was in his grave (he died in March 1226)
