In 1226, after almost 60 years as Constable of Lincoln Castle, Nicholaa de la Haye finally handed over the keys and retired to her manor at Swaton, Lincolnshire.

As Constable, Nicholaa had commanded the defence of the castle through the First Barons' War, seeing off the English rebels and their French allies (with a little help from William Marshal). 2/3
Even after that, William Longspee, Earl of Salisbury - the father-in-law of Nicholaa's granddaughter - tried his best to force her out. But she held on to her inheritance, only retiring once Longspee was in his grave (he died in March 1226)
