As Constable, Nicholaa had commanded the defence of the castle through the First Barons' War, seeing off the English rebels and their French allies (with a little help from William Marshal). 2/3
Even after that, William Longspee, Earl of Salisbury - the father-in-law of Nicholaa's granddaughter - tried his best to force her out. But she held on to her inheritance, only retiring once Longspee was in his grave (he died in March 1226)
Discover the story of Nicholaa de la Haye: the Woman Who Saved England and the first woman to be appointed a sheriff in her own right.
Her defence of Lincoln Castle led to the defeat of the rebels of the First Barons' War - and their French allies.
