The big problem for progressives/liberals/Labour v the right/far right is that the latter still believe in the possibilities of political leadership so they win. We've had it kicked out of us and instead resort to over analysis.

Ultimately, rejoining the single market is obviously in the UK's interest.
It's also significantly in the EU's interest. Having the UK predominantly in the EU rather than the US sphere is strategically necessary.
It doesn't take an act of great political imagination to tie those things together.
