Perhaps the fact that we are conducting an unprecedented experiment with the only home we have, by digging up and burning massive amounts of fossil fuels that is driving global change at rates 10X faster than the most recent warming of this magnitude that occurred oh about 55 million years ago? 🧐
Climate heating is making heatwaves hotter, longer and more frequent. Breaking records by 2C is unusual - as is this kind of heat this early in the year.
I’m a climate scientist. Let me fix this headline. “Nearly a century ago, scientists showed that burning fossil fuels warms the planet. Today, we know human emissions account for over 100% of the warming. Yet dark money and disinformation still work to keep Americans addicted to fossil fuels.”

We’ve provisionally broken the UK record for the highest May minimum temperature for the third night in a row 🌡️ Camborne only fell to 21.4°C overnight, making for another ‘tropical night’ (above 20°C). Meanwhile, Loch Glascarnoch in Scotland dropped to 1.1°C

Great to join @ruthmottram.eurosky.social on Radio 4 Today this morning, discussing the UK heatwave, emerging El Niño and impacts of human-caused climate change www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/... (02:35:30) Heatwaves will keep getting more severe if we keep heating the planet by burning fossil fuels

"I've been a #climate scientist for 33 years and we're seeing exactly the kinds of things that we were warning back then... [although] these records are perhaps more extreme and coming sooner than we had expected," @richardabetts.bsky.social

Today is now the hottest day in May on record with Heathrow and Kew Gardens provisionally reaching 35°C Until yesterday the highest temperature in May was 32.8 °C, but we've now exceeded that record on consecutive days by a full two degrees Celsius 🌡️
