Anyways lets just let NZTA sell all future discretionary transport funding for the next 25 years on one project and do nothing about it!
Also HOLY HECK GOLDEN MILE IS BAD FOR THE CLIMATE?? A PROJECT WHICH LEADS TO MODE SHIFT TO CYCLING AND PT???????????????????????????? brrooo WTF
Ok so if you did all of the RoNS as Public Private Partnerships because that's apparently the 'desired' way to do these, your looking at about triple their expected cost through traditional procurement. Which means a public cost of $165 billion over the lifetime of contracts...
Basically, that project is expensive and will lock in years of PPP repayments, but it's going to happen regardless of evidence????
Watching the Transport and Infrastructure Select Committee on the National Infrastructure Plan, and it feels like watching everyone talk about a car crash thats the Warkworth to Te Hana Public Private Partnership, and saying, nah our new better system will kick in after we commit
"What happens when our shiny new network is open? Will those lengthy complete network closures be consigned to the dustbin of history?" A guest post from KiwiRail, on how their new approach to maintenance will see trains running on most days of the year. www.greaterauckland.org.nz/2026/06/16/k...
How about we get cars off Courtenay place rn with a little sign? Would provide some better PT improvements and cost next to nothing. How about we test it for a few months and… see? Pay artists to glow up the street. No business case necessary. Revert if it really sucks. But it won’t suck.

A handy set of visualisations for anyone who cares.
RNZ canvassing economists to pick over public transport subsidies literally (like actually literally) ONE THOUSAND TIMES SMALLER than a single RON.
