Sketchbook tours have done so much harm to art. No, deary, that's not a sketchbook, that's a portfolio. Sketchbooks are meant to be visual thought processes, which is messy and vibrant and ugly.

The problem with sketchbook tours is they often sanitize the creative process, hiding the false starts and failures that are just as essential to art as the finished pieces.
