This paper was written by four of our councilmembers and numerous authors engaged in lightning safety/research in Africa.

Sad news from Texas, where 5 rescue horses were killed when lightning struck the tree they were standing under.
When animals like horses or cattle stand near trees or fences during thunderstorms, they are at significant risk of injury or death.

Lightning from a Tuesday storm killed five horses at a Texas rescue.
I love to see Daile and colleagues get this important, life-saving work work into the literature. It’s been hard for them to find funding to do this work, which is a shame because a little funding could go a long way in saving lives.

Three people were killed by lightning across the street from the White House on August 4, 2022.
Roughly 4,300 people will be at the UFC event tonight, with a 85,000 tickets allotted for a watch party at the Ellipse.
Hopefully there’s a plan in place to get all of them to safe places.

We've learned that a 20-year-old man in Florida was struck and killed by lightning while kayaking yesterday. This is the 2nd known fatality in the U.S. in 2026 and 100th in Florida since 2006.
Boating is the 3rd deadliest activity with respect to lightning.
