In my opinion—as someone who grew up with and loved the old Academy of Sciences and de Young Museum—the new Academy is a national treasure.
As for the de Young, I dislike its grim, rather sinister exterior, but it's actually nice once you get inside. And the viewing tower (no admission fee!) is A+.
