Bigsby’s famous guitar was crafted from scratch as a solid-body instrument. It was created for country superstar Merle Travis and now resides in the Country Music Hall of Fame in Nashville. But how did the idea for this instrument come about?
The guitar inventor Paul Bigsby was known as a handyman who built almost everything in his garage. To this day, 47 steels, six standard guitars and the other instruments are known to exist.

The Merle Travis Guitar was made of solid curly maple and featured some weight relief. Originally, the guitar had no cutaway, but one was added a few years after it was built. The Travis guitar went on to become one of the most influential instruments in electric guitar history.
The story goes that Merle Travis met Paul Bigsby at a local motorcycle racetrack—Bigsby was racing motorcycles at the time—and asked him to build a solid-body guitar with the same sustain as a lap steel guitar.
For me, it would probably be a lonely walk through a rain-soaked city at night.
