following international law for refugees is a fairytale apparently
i also, uh, dislike being scolded that i have to give up my values to find a compromise with nativist voters because
***we've already tried that***
the existing system is godawful from a rights perspective, we've done incredible harm to our economy trying to appease anti-immigrant fears
never mind the cost to welfare or dignity in making already traumatised people live with a sword over their head for decades, never allowed to feel secure
finally, i also, uh, find myself a little frustrated that i very, very loudly warned them this would happen - that they would embolden the far right (while destroying their own base)
& now that's all happened they just keep scolding, keep their utterly discredited theory

but if they're not satisfied, we must become yet more illiberal
if we're not satisfied, we can fuck off
it would take us well outside of both the spirit & the letter of the refugee conventions - a fact that the home secretary *overtly lied about*
