Two faces calls for two papers! Check out our companion paper showing how the same AVRcap1b stalls stepwise assembly of the tomato NRC3 resistosome mid-build! Check out the paper and the original thread: bsky.app/profile/jmad... www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
As seen on @biorxivpreprint.bsky.social: our story on how the dreaded late blight pathogen hijacks a helper NLR pathway is now out in its final form! šŸŽ‰ Meet AVRcap1b: the two-faced effector šŸ§µšŸ‘‡ www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

🚨 New @biorxivpreprint alert! 🚨 We are thrilled to share our latest findings—building on our earlier work on suppressors of helper NLRs of the NRC family—a Phytophthora infestans L-shaped effector captures resistosome assembly intermediates of tomato NRC3! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1... 1/10

AVRcap1b connects the TOL pathway to activated NRC helper NLRs to block immune signaling! The highlights are in the original twitter thread. Check it out here: bsky.app/profile/mpco...

Host killing by necrotrophs is really complex. Using a 29-gene knockout series in Botrytis cinerea, we show that removing nearly all known cell death-inducing proteins and major phytotoxins is not sufficient to prevent host necrosis. Check out the paper: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
Three weeks left to apply for a chance to present at our new ECR webinar series: Rising Stars of IS-MPMI! We especially encourage applications from researchers based in the Global South! See the quoted thread for info on how to self-nominate. Sponsored by @getgenome.bsky.social

Congrats to all involved! @hsuanpai.bsky.social, Madia, @adamrbentham.bsky.social, Ben, Enoch, @delaconcepcionjc.bsky.social, Dave, @cemstevenson.bsky.social, Angel, @lderevnina.bsky.social , @tolgaboz.bsky.social , @mjbanfield.bsky.social
Huge thanks to my co-lead @jmadhuprakash.bsky.social, and to @kamounlab.bsky.social for all the support! šŸ™ Also big shoutout to the structural phylogenomics wizard @amiralito.bsky.social for his amazing contributions to the story!

We've now shed light on the two ways this sophisticated pathogen effector suppresses immunity and learned a lot about NLR biology in the process. Check out the proposed working model:

Deletion of 29 cell death-inducing proteins and phytotoxin biosynthetic genes does not completely abolish virulence of Botrytis cinerea
Botrytis cinerea is a necrotrophic plant pathogen with an extremely wide host range. During invasion, the fungus induces rapid host cell death and proliferates in the necrotic tissue. The mechanisms o...
