In Imperial #Rome the #ornatrix was a sought after figure. But who were they?
The ornatrix was a female slave whose daily task was to take care of creating elaborate hairstyles by literally sewing the hair in shape. They also were in charge of arranging clothing, make up, jewellery & perfumes.
Happy Matralia! This #ancient celebration was held in honour of Mater Matuta, the goddess of fertility, childbirth, dawn & ripening grain. Free women in their first marriage took part in the rites, offering prayers for their sisters' children & making sacrificial cakes.ย

On this day, 10th June, in the year 38 CE, Julia Drusilla, member of the Roman Imperial family, died at the age of 21 from an illness which had taken over Rome. Her brother was Caligula. After her death, Caligua had her deified with the name Diva Drusilla Panthea.

The temple was vowed after Hannibal's victory at the Battle of Lake Trasimene 217 BC, following guidance from the Sibylline Books.ย

From 7โ15 June, #Romans honoured #Vesta, goddess of the hearth & sacred flame.
At the circular Temple of Vesta in the Forum, the Vestal Virgins tended the eternal flame, believed to protect Rome itself.
Women visited the temple barefoot to offer prayers for their households. ๐ฏ๏ธ
