Using macros or software to format citations is also not remotely comparable to letting the chatbot write your paper!
Listening to a @theresthistory.bsky.social episode where the presenters suggest that Belgium and (checks notes) Italy are “made up countries” as opposed to England and (checks notes again) the United States. So it’s time for this:
oh cool we’re already at “fully AI-generated videos about how AI steals Indigenous languages” now with bonus slop images of generically “Indigenous” women, and a “nobody’s talking about it” while referring to but not actually naming the specific Māori people who are VERY MUCH talking about it
“The damage …will show up in a decade, when New Zealand’s deep-tech sector is thinner, its universities are less competitive for global talent, and the high-value industries … have less to build on. By then, nobody will connect the dots back to the year the seed bank was raided to fund the harvest.”
I used to explicitly teach exactly this at university of bath computer science in a course called “research project preparation” How to read science articles was in the same lecture as how to not plagiarise / how to cite; iirc Good to have a reading for @hertieschool.bsky.social students, thx Pat

Why not both? This article is itself a great example of junk research published in a junk journal (charging >US$3,000). Arguing IN FAVOUR of "Global South exclusion" (lamenting "post-WEIRD bandwagoning"), approvingly quoting racists like Watson and Kanazawa... and just overall little substance.
My hot take: we faculty bear some blame for failing to teach students how to read efficiently. Reading every word was never practical, and LLMs tempt students we haven’t taught otherwise. Here’s what I wrote to teach this - please use with your own students if helpful! doi.org/10.31234/osf...
Aotearoa, time to vote for your favourite NZ songs (in English and te reo Māori): vote.rnz.co.nz Need some inspiration for waiata Māori? Check out @danya-pav.bsky.social 's favourites on @manyvoices.bsky.social podcast, from "Tūtira Mai Ngā Iwi" to "Kai Tangata": www.youtube.com/watch?v=jWJV...

Thermo Fisher now has a page up in response to our observations. They flatly deny that images were manipulated or fabricated while repeating that images were "optimized for presentation and clarity on the website", no lie, six times. www.thermofisher.com/us/en/home/l...

My Students Can’t Read. “There is a measurable, generational collapse in sustained reading and writing, and the academy is responding to it with improvisation and exhaustion rather than the structural overhaul it requires.” [chronicle.com]
🌏🎶 Episode #3 of @manyvoices.bsky.social podcast with @danya-pav.bsky.social covers traditional Māori waiata, metal fusion (Alien Weaponry), haka for peace as well as war, and how Danya combines Indigenous knowledge and science in her PhD research. www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Mpb...

The Thermo Fisher situation keeps getting worse. We've now collected 450+ problematic images presented as verification data in TF's antibody catalog. This includes: 🖌️ Dozens more images with duplications or painting 🖨️ Hundreds of blots that all share the same background (behold slideshow below)

🔪"social science fields grounded in strong, integrative theoretical frameworks are comparatively resistant to junkification... evo psych provides a clear example... constrains explanation through a common theoretical framework... high barriers to entry and sharply limits low-value niche occupation"
