I'm incredibly impressed with the insight implied by Mothership RPG's equivalent of Appendix N. It shows a real awareness of context, and how science fiction is historically situated and culturally potent.
In my experience, people seem to have very great difficulty thinking outside the box. Or even imagining that there might be something outside the box. This is particularly true of boxes big enough to fit people into.
