maybe; I think it's more strongly correlated w/ anti-intellectualism & anti-art strains in American culture. "Foreign film" was treated as a punchline for something long, dull, anti-climactic, or overly symbolic for decades. (It's hard to imagine for example Hollywood making Last Year at Marienbad.)

wondering if the dislike of subtitles in the us is linked to the lower literacy rates due to them using that phony reading technique in their schools
