Remember the pro-Nazi Americans, the movements against African Americans, and the anti-gay groups. All claimed to be pro American. The real question we must ask is simple: what version of America are they talking about?
Thought I’d remind people about the thing in the White House. Here’s some history for you. It’s going to take years to recover from the damage caused during those four years. Some of you voted for him, but the effects left behind will take years and years to repair.
What you’ve done is set yourselves back years, and Black people even longer. Voting is not a joke. You have to know more than you think. People from New York City could have told you about Trump because they’ve seen con men and hustlers like him before.
My friends ask me about MAGA. I tell them this is not new. Long before it, there were always people who called themselves pro American while standing against other Americans. That contradiction has been part of this country for a long time.
People from New York know a flim-flam man because they’ve seen them on every corner hustling people out of money. We recognize that behavior. I’m sorry for your loss. I hope the future treats you better than I think it will.
When I was younger, going out to eat with someone meant conversation, laughter, and enjoying the evening together. People actually talked to each other. You looked forward to sharing ideas, stories, and time face to face.
Now it feels like a lot of that connection is fading with the younger generation. More and more, screens are taking the place of people. It’s strange watching laptops and phones slowly become dinner companions instead of friends and family.
People always ask me about the past and how it compares to today. There is no simple answer. We once thought the worst president we would ever see was Richard Nixon. As it turns out, we were wrong.
The reason I think things are changing is not just because women are getting used to taking care of themselves and doing a good job at it. Men have changed a lot as well. The old men ran into battle and fought in wars. Now, some men run away from bugs and sadly enough in my old age I’m one of them.
I went to a restaurant the other day and noticed something that really struck me. So many people were sitting across from just one companion… a laptop instead of another human being. It made me stop and think about how much things have changed.
