Today for @assignedmedia.org, fat trans folks talk self-love, gender-affirming surgery, and why everyone’s always all up in their business.
Because I don’t want to live in a world where trans people have to be small to feel worthy.
This one's important. Multiple people I know have been denied gender affirming care for size reasons and medical professionals need to get on it.
Today on Assigned Media, @madisyn-writes.bsky.social is centering the experiences of people who are both fat and trans in a piece that lifts up trans voices, and also seeks answers to medical concerns about surgeries for trans people of size.

A trans student was assaulted and harassed. The principal’s solution: you can transfer
The principal knew about the attack in advance bc the assailants were so brazen they posted their plan online.
The principal’s response: nada🧵
Trans women's status as so dehumanized as to not be worth defending is long established, but even so this is pretty fucking brazen.
Why should you support Assigned Media? Our committment to lifting up trans voices from every corner of our community is a great reason to become a member today.

It might be worth covering some of the complications that surgeons are considering?
Wound dehiscence in particular wasn't explicitly mentioned by that study but is known for general surgery to be strongly correlated with obesity
I had my own poor experience with this and it did complicate recovery
“Are our bodies a test that we have to pass in order to deserve respect, or do we have inherent dignity and a right to self determination?”
That's a banger of a quote
This is awful & I hope she wins the case bc she deserves whatever she can get from this
On the other hand I don't love that gender dysphoria is being used to invoke the ADA; feels too much like gay as a mental disorder
I'm sure there is a strategic reason for it; would love a legal explanation
Doctors love to deny trans people necessary surgeries for reasons of size. While there is some evidence to back up increased danger at higher BMIs, this does need to be balanced against the needs and autonomy of an individual. Certainly no one should be forced to lose weight in order to get surgery.
