A nice surprise to find Yellow-browed Warblers (Phylloscopus inornatus) breeding in a relatively small larch forest at ~2,000m elevation in E Kazakhstan, in the same habitat as Hume’s Warbler. As far as we know, the species was not previously known to breed in Kazakhstan. @pdvsky.bsky.social
How's this for a feedback loop?
Ice sheets build up lowering sea level → reduced water load leads to increased mid ocean ridge volcanism after a 10-20 kyr lag → volcanism releases iron → iron causes plankton blooms → atmospheric CO₂ goes down → ice sheets build up

Increased hydrothermal iron inputs from mid-ocean ridges, triggered by ice-age sea-level falls, supported higher surface primary productivity during the last two glacial terminations, according to pro...
Very excited to finally have this out in the world! The first paper from my PhD (and my first first-author publication) makes the case for a new entrant to the world of long-lived animal models: Heliconius butterflies. Out now in @natcomms.nature.com www.nature.com/articles/s41... (1/10)
I am recruiting a PhD student (fully funded, 4yrs) to analyze modern 🧬 and ancient 🦴 genomic data from humans and domestic animals 🐑
Please share, I am happy to chat at #ICP2026 or #SMBE2026 this summer

Studying long-lived species across the animal kingdom could provide insights into healthy ageing in humans. This study reveals long lifespans and slowed ageing in Heliconius butterflies, identifying t...
Minibwa is a hybrid of bwa-mem and minimap2 and the successor of bwa-mem for short-read mapping. ~4X/2.5X as fast as bwa-mem/bwa-mem2 for WGS reads at comparable accuracy. Native support of directional bisulfite-seq. Applicable to long reads. Preprint at arxiv.org/abs/2606.15357
Spent the last two years developing a new Intro to Physics course for undergrad biology majors. It features tons of examples from biology (especially Ecology & Evolution!) and requires only middle school-level math. Lecture note here shorturl.at/0PiVp
Any comments or feedback are highly welcome!
New paper out! In this one with @ndimhypervol.bsky.social, @rdinnager.bsky.social, @economo.bsky.social, and Ale Casadei-Ferreira, we show that some commonly used ENM/SDM permutation tests can be badly derailed by not accounting for sampling bias.

@plosbiology.org - The integration of biogeography and ecology has been limited. The emergence of new methods and high-quality ecological network data at biogeographical scales promote deeper integration of biogeography and ecology. @mncn-csic.bsky.social
