Welcome to the new semester!
Over 90 students from 30 countries started at Swiss TPH 👋🏼
Can ChatGPT help analyse public health data?
A new study by Swiss TPH explored this question through a randomised controlled trial with students and researchers, using ChatGPT to conduct an epidemiological data analysis as a tool or an addition to R/Stata.
The autumn semester @unibas.ch is about to start and we are looking forward to welcoming 25 new PhD and 62 new MSc students at @swisstph.ch. About 1/2 of our students are from abroad, many from the Global South, creating a unique diverse atmosphere and many opportunities to learn from each other! 🌍🤗
Unser 4. Jahresbericht ist publiziert. Möglicherweise das detaillierteste nationale Monitoring von nichtionisierender Strahlung weltweit.

New pipeline to identify drugs blocking #malaria transmission
It combines a high-throughput in vitro assay & a mouse model, enabling evaluation of compounds targeting the parasite's mosquito-infecting forms
@SwissTPH.ch
Heartfelt congratulations to Aita Signorell for having been awarded the venia docendi by @unibas.ch!
With a background in Biology (MSc) and Biochemistry (PhD). Aita has spent the past 15 years working in clinical and implementation research.
An all-in-one pipeline for in vitro discovery and in vivo testing of Plasmodium falciparum #malaria transmission-blocking drugs

👥 Meet our consortium partners!
Finally, we are introducing the team from @swisstph.ch - another driving force in MARKOPOLO. They play a key role in assessing the #health #effects of #environmental #pollutants.

The Biomolecular Screening Facility has contributed to a successful collaborative study led by Till Voss (Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, University of Basel), resulting in the development of a robust, all in one pipeline for the discovery and testing of transmission blocking drugs against Plasmodium falciparum. This multidisciplinary effort combines a high-throughput in vitro assay with a novel in vivo model, enabling systematic evaluation of compounds that target mature stage V gametocytes - the only forms of the parasite that infect mosquitoes.
Current antimalarials often fail to target mature stage V gametocytes. To aid antimalarial drug discovery, the authors present a preclinical malaria transmission-blocking drug research platform, using engineered parasites, that facilitates the screening for gametocytocidal compounds in vitro and the evaluation of transmission-blocking drug activity in vivo.
