Key findings: 1️⃣ A validated simulation-based inference pipeline providing probabilistic estimates of recurrent inhibition from observable motor unit spiking features. 2️⃣ Application to six human muscles revealing previously uncharacterized muscle- and intensity-dependent patterns.

We combined experimental data + simulation to study how nociceptive stimulation affects motor unit behavior during moderate contractions. Our findings challenge the traditional view of uniform inhibition and provide new insights into how the nervous system adapts to pain during muscle contraction.
1️⃣ Cortical alpha- and beta-band modulations are largely expressed in motor neuron output, including in task-irrelevant pools 2️⃣ These inputs primarily increase motor neuron synchronization 3️⃣ This synchronization facilitates the rapid build-up of drive after a sudden increase in excitatory input

🆕 🚩 New preprint on #bioRxiv by F. Dernoncourt . We introduce a conceptually new framework that combines large-scale human motor unit recordings with simulation-based inference to estimate recurrent inhibition during voluntary contractions in humans. 🔗 Preprint: www.biorxiv.org/content/10.6...
