...like the 1000s of self-organised volunteer groups that sprang up in Covid. Picking up prescriptions, delivering shopping, my village even made PPE kit for care workers. After every earthquake, flood or riot, you'll find neighbours helping each other. Do we have more in common than we see?
Accounting for that carbon when a tree is felled requires a crystal ball. Will that tree become a table in someone's house for 100 years? Will it get used to make clothes and end up in landfill? Will it get made into a fence, but then fall down in a storm and end up on a bonfire? Who knows?! ...
...but we do know that if standards bodies like the GHGP loose the trust of climate scientists, academics, businesses and governments, then all of carbon accounting looses trust. Just at a time when we need accurate numbers more than ever.
...treatment of waste, transport and distribution. 8 categories, that all experienced carbon accountants follow in their reporting. The GHGP has recently published its first 'Land Sector and Removals Standard' coming into effect in Jan 2027. Land emissions are totally different from supply chains..
...as they include emissions (eg burping cows) and sinks (eg growing trees and restoring peatland). So, the allegations from Danny that the fine details of how to account for carbon in woodlands are now being set by insiders in the forestry industry are deeply worrying. Trees sequester...
This is a shockwave for the carbon accounting industry. Quick breakdown on why it's important: When businesses come to carbon accounting - like @smallworldconsult.bsky.social where I work - they want their carbon footprint to follow international standards. The Greenhouse Gas Protocol is... 🧵
...carbon as they grow, and that can be accounted for with fairly standard metrics, depending on the species and location of the trees. If there is a fire or tree death, that should be accounted for during the tree's lifetime too...
Loving BlueSky editor training. I'd forgotten how posting with a 300-character limit trains my short-form editing skills (left BirdPlace years ago). Today I'm writing an 'accessible guide' to a big climate report, and every sentence benefits from an edit. What's your fave BlueSky benefit?
...THE international standard for how you account for your carbon. They have a range of standards for corporations, for supply chains, for products, even for cities and whole countries. EG for your supply chain, they set categories for what you buy into goods and services, commuting travel...
The media portray 'them vs us' and violence leading to more violence. But look for the 'tend and befriend' response. Neighbours looking out for neighbours, vulnerable people protected and cared for. Tend and befriend is a common reaction to stress and trauma... belfastmedia.com/ardoyne-comm...
