Incredible stuff happening in New Zealand.
This report proposes a legal framework where going over an objective threshold of housing scarcity (a premium on higher-density land prices) would trigger *automatic* upzoning.
I always look forward to AHV's Happy Hour--it's fun catching up with pro-housing friends, but my favourite part is the new people who come!
(That's a hint, if you haven't come out yet, come tonight and say hi!)
The unfortunate thing about ABC is that they’re just kinda bozos
In love with this illustration by John Picacio, from Stormbringer (vol 2 of the collected Elric books, published by Saga).
Once again, we find ourselves in a situation where one side is building arguments based on data and expertise, while the other side ignores all that, smirking, while they dog whistle about "common sense".
They don't care if you get hit by a car, snowflake. It's just another chance to "own the libs"
We have a lot of thoughts about last night's vote. We're thrilled that 4/5 of the Vision Zero Action Plan passed, and grateful to the hundreds of you who wrote in support.
But we're also dismayed that ABC stripped out the most important measure. Read more:

The point of American zoning is to put the most people in the worst places for residential, so they don't inconvenience the people rich enough to live in the best places for residential.
Busy Thursday after work?
Well, cancel them, we've got the Villages ODP amendment to discuss! What's your vision for missing middle housing & 5 minute walksheds in Vancouver?
Come meet with us this Thursday from 5pm-whenever @ Rogue Waterfront.
In the past 3 weeks ABC has tweeted about " #publicsafety " 16 times. Yesterday they voted against a critical, data-driven measure that would objectively save lives.
12 pedestrians were killed on Vancouver streets last year, the most in almost 2 decades.
Sim and ABC don't care about your safety.
The public safety party does not care about the safety of the public
Yesterday at Vancouver City Council, Ken Sim’s ABC majority voted to gut the Vision Zero Safe Mobility Plan by rejecting safer speed limits on the city’s most dangerous roads.
ABC isn't on here but they're over on the other site spreading misinformation about the VZ Action Plan, and also making it abundantly clear that they are choosing driver speed over human life. (1/3)

I’m told zoning and planning was invented to keep residents from noxious areas. Here’s where that’s placing 200+ apartments. It’s a 17 minute walk on the shoulder of an Interstate to the train station. Who wouldn’t want to live next to a loud polluted dangerous highway? TOD!

This will go down as one of the most shameful votes from ABC during their term.
All of the councilors in favour of Peter Meiszner's amendment will have blood on their hands.
Shame!

BREAKING: Mayor Ken Sim's ABC majority voted not to reduce speed limits on major roads, despite 93% of all road fatalities in Vancouver happening on arterials. This was one of the most important Near-Term Actions in the entire plan, because roads will never be safe until people drive at safe speeds.
