First up, our first panel of the day:
Capital and Capitalism
Featuring: Erika Rappaport (UC Santa Barbara); @tsasson.bsky.social (Tehila Sasson, Oxford); @kevinkosullivan.bsky.social (Kevin O’Sullivan, Galway); Jonathan Saha (Durham); Matthew Hilton (QMUL) #MBS2026
Fair enough - and I tend to agree that the FAI should have the guts to stand up. But given their union (the PFAI) has also spoken out against these matches, couldn't they vote to boycott? It would be a very powerful act.
We move further west to Galway for our next #MapMonday. Irish Historic Towns Atlas no. 28, Galway/Gaillimh by Jacinta Prunty and Paul Walsh was published by the @ria.ie in 2016.

My first World Cup was 1990. Glorious.
Obviously: Sheedy - Bonner - Schillaci
But also: Oman Biyik - Milla - Makanaky
And Valderrama's hair. And Higuita's dribbling. And Claudio Cannigia rounding Taffarel in a game I taped because I was at my gran's in Dublin.

A warning from Muirhead Tower, University of Birmingham, yesterday.
Research Ireland's statement in response to the open letter from the Irish research community. One sentence strikes me immediately: "AHSS research can be a distinctive national strength for Ireland".
In fact, it's more proper to say *is* already - not *can*.

Barney Ronay on Qatar 22; plus ça change: "You get the leaders you deserve, or in football’s case the leaders your leader most wants to stand next to. Either way the global game has never looked quite so managed and muzzled and at the same time so out of control."

A brilliant three days at the MBS conference. I heard so many excellent papers and lots of new ways of thinking about familiar and not-so-familoar topics. A huge thanks to @lucydelap.bsky.social & @drsarahlkenny.bsky.social for the invite to speak. Great, too, to catch up with lots of old friends.

Really enjoyed this conversation - and a pleasure to be in such excellent company. We had a lot to say about how we read histories of capitalism and where we see them. We also talked about the usefulness (or not) of the term 'polycrisis' as a widely applicable concept.
"You don't survive a crisis by ignoring it" - exactly. Brilliant contribution from Margot Finn on the last panel of an excellent first day of MBS 2026.

I wish I could say I enjoyed Japan and South Korea 2002 as much as the World Cups of my childhood
