Climate data scientist @metoffice specialising in generating interactive websites and bespoke #dataviz. #climate #maps #GIS #mapping #Rstats Views are my own

Terry Pratchett died 11 years ago today and he still brings me great pleasure to this day. Here is a #dataviz showing his published discworld books by year.
Here in the UK March has been warmer and sunnier than average. It has been very wet in the west of Scotland and north-west England and dry elsewhere. Here is a climate/weather #dataviz summary for the past year.
In theory the point the sun is highest in the sky should be at noon (12 pm). However due to daylight saving and countries like China with only one time zone noon can actually be as late as 3pm. This #dataviz shows the sun's highest point in the day as the year progresses.
Come March, the buds on the tree's begin to burst, this #dataviz shows the timing of bud burst for different tree species across the UK. The black lines show the timing in the Spring for the years 2000 to 2025 and the blue line is the average day for that species.
Today at 2:46 pm (GMT) the sun is going to return to the northern hemisphere (the March equinox). Here is a #dataviz showing the path of the sun from different perspectives as the year progresses.
In the UK we have just seen extreme heat at the end of May with temperatures reaching 35°C for the first time, more than 2°C higher than previous highs. Overall the spring has been warm (in England the warmest on record), it has also been dry and sunny (except west Scotland). #climatechange #dataviz
Here in the UK, April was warm, very sunny and dry (except in West Scotland). Here is a climate/weather #dataviz summary for the past 12 months #globalwarming #climatechange
In this @metoffice.gov.uk podcast I talk about data visualisation along with @edhawkins.org www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNoU...
We use 30 year averages to show climatology (average weather conditions). During the 20th century the UK climatology followed a path around a confined box. With #globalwarming and #climatechange they have escaped out the box. This #dataviz shows UK rainfall and temperature.
Here in the UK, February has been mild, wet and very dull. Overall the winter has been very wet except in West Scotland and mild except for a cold period at the start of January. Here is a #dataviz summary of the weather and climate for the past 12 months. #climatechange #globalwarming
