for all the recurring discourse games people love to have about "auteurs", for some reason it stops short of this, despite the situation both being much more clear and obvious, and also being the acctual underlying material cause behind all the "auteur" mystifications. curious!
people really need to stop identifying the work done at a business with its owners and managers, a brand is not a person
And one day games and every other commodity that exists today will be de-commodified again (that's what communism is).
of course people do this because these business owners do everything to create this perception that the brand is them, that everything flows from them and that all the credit should go to them, but you don't have to play along with the marketing! you don't have to show everybody that you're a mark!
Wishes for games discourse:
- Stop saying "product" when you mean commodity. Everything we produce is a "product". When produced for market exchange, it's a commodity
- Stop treating "art" and "product" as opposing categories
- Define what you actually mean instead of just using the term "art"
At no point in history has our labour been so productive. If it wasn't for the need of capital owners to expand their capital, the work we would need to do to produce everything we need would be greatly reduced. What would we do with all the extra free time? Maybe make and play games together.
This is called de-commodification by the way.
There was a time when digital games were shared and not sold, before they became a commodity. For every commodity that exists today, everything that is exchanged on the market, there was a time before, when it a non-market relation between people.
Appreciate the folks who talked to me for this story. To me it's in part a reminder that union fights can be long and full of setbacks, but (imo) they're worth it!
lmfao these people are so unserious
