Not only have we pushed back the previous record by 5,000 years, but we’ve shown that dogs and wolves were already clearly distinct, both biologically and in their relationships with humans, during the Stone Age.

This suggests that dog domestication occurred during the last Ice Age, more than 10,000 years before the emergence of any other domesticated plants or animals.

We also found diverse hunter-gatherer populations across Europe and Anatolia, each with their own weird and wonderful cultural practices, were united by close relationships with dogs. This deep and lasting bond truly cements their status as “man’s best friend.”
