I don't necessarily think they altered the contrast in the color version. But by adding color to midtones, our eye automatically perceives those areas as brighter, even if contrast wasn't touched, and that Noir feeling is largely lost.

Watch Spider Noir in black and white. It is much better for the intended Noir style. The black and white feels much more contrasty.
