Watch Spider Noir in black and white. It is much better for the intended Noir style. The black and white feels much more contrasty.
They did use a stylized sort of color in the color version that is worth checking out. Almost comic-book at times. It's been said that it is a "Technicolor" style, but I find it even more stylized than that. it is not bad at all, and is visually engaging. It is just less Noir.
I don't necessarily think they altered the contrast in the color version. But by adding color to midtones, our eye automatically perceives those areas as brighter, even if contrast wasn't touched, and that Noir feeling is largely lost.
And by coincidence last night I rewatched Close Encounters of the Third Kind. This is not in any way a Noir film. BUT it does have lots of night scenes, lots of high contrast, AND lots of exaggerated, stylized color. Close Encounters has a stronger Noir look than the color Spider Noir.
