Now, correlation is not causation. And you could argue that the rise of partisan talk radio has nothing to do with abolishing the FD (even though that is what allowed for the partisanship.)
OTOH, I can't think of much else that could cause the steep media/govt. trust decline in 90/91.

This second chart shows how the steep rise in DIS-trust in media and government that happens around 1990/1991 is VERY strongly correlated with the rise in popularity of partisan talk radio.
