We let participants encode images (animals/tools) across three temporally separated phases: Pre-conditioning, Conditioning (1 category was paired with a mild electric shock⚡) & Post-conditioning.
24h later, a surprise recognition test revealed two distinct ways brains organized this experience:

⏱️ Some individuals isolated the threat to when it happened. Emotional memory boosts were strictly locked within the shock phase
⚡ Others structured memory by relevance, ignoring time gaps/externally imposed boundaries. Their threat-related memory boost spilled over into the subsequent, safe phase
