We let ​participants encode images (animals/tools) across three temporally separated phases: Pre-conditioning, Conditioning (1 category was paired with a mild electric shock⚡) & Post-conditioning. ​24h later, a surprise recognition test revealed two distinct ways brains organized this experience:
