"Taxes" for ~most of human civilisation were um almost entirely regressive and it is a relatively new thing that they go to fund public healthcare or sanitation and not huge palaces
we need a simple, punchy term that encompasses all forms of respect for shared common infrastructure, because until we have a word for it there's no hope of Americans ever learning it
