I'm particularly pleased to see this investment being explicitly linked to the Government's Pride in Place programme, that empowers local people to shape the renewal of their communities.
UK food prices keep rising - what's driving that, and why does it matter? @alexmackaness.bsky.social is here explaining why once-occasional disruptions to food prices are now a near-constant feature of the system. 👇️ You can read more about this in our food security series - linked below.
Long gone are the days of the previous Tory government's "plan for drivers" which pitted driving against over modes of transport & actively tried to stop councils from making streets safer for walking & wheeling.
Alongside better green spaces, thriving high streets & new community spaces, supporting local communities to make walking & wheeling safer & more convenient is exactly the kind of tangible improvements to the places people live that Labour should be investing in.
Backed by new national targets - for short urban trips & children's routes to school - and ÂŁ4.5bn for new walking & wheeling routes & safer crossings, this has the genuine opportunity to ignite a travel revolution in this country.
It's great to see the Government's new Cycling & Walking Investment Strategy, a bold & ambitious plan to improve public health through more physical activity & cleaner air, boost local economies & help people save money on travel costs. www.gov.uk/government/n...
As expected, the Mayor of @london.gov.uk has been continually proven right on the bold leadership he's shown on air pollution in London. The achievements have been remarkable & should be widely celebrated, not just in London but across the Labour Party, movement & the country.
Incredible - dramatic improvements in air quality in London are linked to a measurable impact on Londoners' health: 9.3% drop in heart-related emergency admissions 5.1% drop in hospital admissions of all illnesses and health conditions Cleaning up our air protects our future.
Alongside the Government's wider reforms to public transport, devolve transport powers, roll out investment for new projects, improve integration & support the EV transition, there is a Labour vision for transport being established that puts convenience, affordability & decarbonisation at the heart.
Meanwhile, specific focus on routes to school will not only help with the Government's aim to "raise the healthiest generation of children in our history", but also help support children's freedom & independence to play and move safely in their communities.
