I have found another mistake in written English that I've found increasingly common that it's starting to become a pet peeve.
Motive (as in a reason) and motif (as in thematic element/pattern).
Time will tell if it'll replace my current one
reign (as in a monarch) and rein (as in a horse)

One of the methodology to gauge historical literacy rates was to go through church records and note down who signed it with their written name or just simply use an X. With the assumption that people who write down their names are also able to read.
Which again isn’t necessarily the case.
I like this ongoing bit in Auxesia of the folks in the powersuits dual-weilding whatever relevant equipment are used for the next upgrade.
It’s an interesting scenario to think about.
That written label there may not be from the artist’s hand but someone else. Or they could’ve copied it from someone else but not be able to read it since writing and reading are two different skills.
So I take the read that the artist read the description and decided to ignore it.
I was under the assumption that people who worked on books back then were themselves literate. thinking about it, that’s not necessarily the case. It’s possible artist who illustrated this book couldn’t read it.

Thinking about my favorite medieval miniature: St Helayin riding a crocodile across the nile.
The text describes a crocodile as a four legged beast with a golden colour. And the artist decided to draw nothing close to it. In the making of a book, the writing is done first before the art.
