Conversion from a mutualist to a parasite (the polar extremes of symbiosis) created a new lineage of parasites (Apicomplexa) ~ 500 million years ago. Apicomplexa radiated with animals creating the modern parasites of humans such as malaria plus ~6,000 species of animal parasites.
