My Top 10 Spielberg: Close Encounters of the Third Kind AI: Artificial Intelligence War of the Worlds The Fabelmans Jaws ET: The Extraterrestrial Raiders of the Lost Ark Schindler’s List Jurassic Park Duel Yeah, it’s a very personal list, based on the ones I’ve seen. 😊
The Sketchers (1913), by John Singer Sargent
Spring Afternoon at Giverny (1885), by Claude Monet
(1/4) As is my wont, I’m curious about For All Mankind, so I already know what will happen to a lot of the characters. In a way this is pleasurable, because for S2 at least I can enjoy the plotting & the way the themes & arcs develop. But I do also feel sad for characters I’ve come to love.
(4/4) A bit like Sergei & Margo, who like other characters in Episode 6 are learning a kind of glasnost about who they really are. Kelly applying to the navy, Ellen planning to come out. As long as enough of us can see past our prejudices & recognise others as people, maybe there’s always hope!
(2/4) The real life Apollo-Soyuz is the first space mission I can remember watching on TV, when I was nine years old. I have a visual memory of Stafford & Leonov reaching through the hatch & shaking hands. Apparently I saw at least one of the moon landings too, but I was very young & don’t remember.
(3/4) In the show, Apollo-Soyuz is a nice counterpoint to S2’s theme about Cold War tensions & the militarisation of space. The personal thaws between American & Russian characters mirrors how, in the real world, David Scott & Alexei Leonov became lifelong friends after the Apollo-Soyuz mission.
