Instead, as Iraqis like @observer46664.bsky.social are documenting, Baghdad is assailed with drones and bombs every night, a mostly hidden part of the relentless US/Israeli onslaught against the peoples of the Middle East. A cancelled conference is nothing compared to death, fear and ecocide... 3/4

Your Iraq update for today is that America?/Israel? is striking Iraqi Hashd posts across Iraq and Iraqi Shi'a militias are targeting US interests in Baghdad and Iraqi Kurdistan. This has been happening every single day. You will read this and move on but this has been our life since the war started.
The conference represented a moment of hope and return to the international stage for Iraqi ancient historians and archaeologists, as the first time in 25 years that large numbers of scholars of ancient Iraq were to meet in Baghdad. (That 2001 conference was my first, mind-blowing trip to Iraq.) 2/4
but for me, it's symptomatic of the uncountably many ways in which this unforgivable, unjustifiable war inflicts damage, terror and exclusion on millions of people who just want to live in peace, collaboration and hope. I despair and rage for all the lives and lost futures this war has ended 4/4
It should have been the first day of a wonderful conference in Baghdad today - the first time ever that the International Association of Assyriology assembled in Iraq for its annual meeting. This conference was to be the culmination of 4 years of hard work by Iraqi and international colleagues. 1/4
