I was an exchange student in Australia pre-internet. INTL calls weren't cheap. My host families would drive me 5 minutes out of Tamworth NSW to an analog pay phone at a gas station because the phone was known to be "broken" (rigged? IDK) so I could call my mom & dad for free.
